Yesterday morning I was looking for a Spotify playlist for my ride to work and saw something new at the top of the menu.
“Your Daily Mix.” Curious, I tapped on it and the result was better than I imagined. Waiting for me were four new playlists with some awesome tunes.
Spotify announced the new feature last week, describing it as “a series of playlists with near endless playback that combines your favorite tracks with new songs we think you’ll love, minus the effort that goes into creating the perfect listening session.”
I already look forward to Discover Weekly each Monday. Daily Mix is basically Discover Weekly on crack. Spotify automatically generates a playlist for musical styles I listen to regularly, so I can listen to a shuffling of music that suits my mood. Feeling 90s alt rock? That’s my Daily Mix 2. Even better, the rock never stops. Once I near the end of the list, new songs are automatically added in so I can keep listening.
I chose Daily Mix 1 for this morning commute. This one is a bit eclectic, combining pop punk and worship tunes.
I sometimes listen to these styles back-to-back as my preferences change throughout the day, so maybe that is why Spotify put them together. But listening to Misty Edwards followed by Against Me! is a bit jarring if I’m not prepared for it. The other lists are more consistent. Here is a sampling of each from my account.
I’m digging the new feature so far. One of Spotify’s disadvantages versus Pandora was the lack of quality radio-style mixes. With Daily Mix, Spotify has taken a huge step to close that gap. I look forward to when I can ditch Pandora altogether and do all of my online listening from one platform.
